LOVELAND, CO, March 15, 2011 – The Children’s Foundation proudly presents “Ballet Foklorico Los Angelitos,” an incredible 30 member youth music and dance troupe, from Manzanillo, Colima, Mexico performing May 1 through May 8, 2011, throughout the northern Colorado front range. This spectacular concert series is a benefit for the children’s home “Casa Hogar Los Angelitos.”
Rescuing children and youth from situations of abuse, extreme poverty, and abandonment is the purpose of Casa Hogar Los Angelitos, founded by The Children’s Foundation in 1996. These children receive full time care with the focus being on their healing and development in every area of their lives.
The youth performing range in age from 12 to 19 and have performed before audiences of thousands throughout Mexico. This is the dance troupe’s third year performing in Colorado. Many of the youth are from the children’s home and have been brought out of extreme circumstances from the surrounding regions of Manzanillo. “Ballet Folklorico Los Angelitos” is part of the educational program for the children’s home. All of these youth must maintain high scholastic grades to participate in this program. Many of their personal stories are as inspiring and incredible as the talent they display.
The precision and physical endurance involved in this performance requires extensive hours of practice and discipline and is a theatrical work combining the classic art of dance with the legends, history, beliefs, events and deeply rooted traditions of the people it represents. “Ballet Folklorico Los Angelitos” covers a vast array of styles and cultural heritages ranging from the pre-Hispanic dances of the Mayan and Aztec civilizations to modern day regional songs and dances from the states of Mexico.
The Ballet Folklorico troupe is directed by Juan Cruz Martinez, Director of Dance for Casa Hogar Los Angelitos, who lost his parents when he was 7 years old. He lived on the streets and with different people until, at the age of 12, he entered the orphanage “Los Pequeños Hermanos” in Cuernavaca, Morelia, Mexico. At the age of 17 he entered the professional school of dance “Escuela de Danza Socicultur” in Mexico City under Director Professor Hector Fink. In 1997 he founded the Ballet Folklorico program for IUBAM de University of Colima in Manzanillo, Colima, MX. In 2008 he formed the “Ballet Folklorico de Casa Hogar Los Angelitos” with Casa Hogar Los Angelitos as part of the educational program of the casa hogar and with the invitation open for students from the community to participate. Juan’s goal is to form a dance and music school that promotes the culture of Mexico around the world.
The musical group, Los Soneritos, ranging in age from 12 to 16, was formed in 2005 with the intention to preserve and share the traditional music of the “Sones de Vera-cruz..” The Mexican “Son” is a fusion of Spanish and African traditions with variations from region to region, both in rhythm and instrumentation. The mission of “Los Soneritos” is to share “our” music to keep alive the sounds of the traditions of the past. The group plays 27 different instruments, changing from instrument to instrument, many which are handmade in the original style.
Los Soneritos is directed by Omar Alejando Rojas Ramos who studied at the University of Colima with a degree in “Danza Esciencia” (Dance Science). Also with this group is Marcelo Garcia Cisneros, a 25 year old floreador (brandishing of the rope), who began performing at age 6 under his famous floreador father, Marcell Garcia R. Marcelo, and is currently an instructor at Casa Hogar Los Angelitos.
The vision and mission of Casa Hogar Los Angelitos is to rescue and provide a solid foundation and opportunity for each child to develop their potential, become successful and productive citizens, and break the cycle of poverty and abuse. An important part of the project is education. Casa Hogar Los Angelitos provides academic tutoring, public education and the opportunity to study life skills.
You will not want to miss this accomplished, elegant and proud performance representing a rich and colorful culture.
